Problem

After being diagnosed with Leukemia, kids are typically asked to follow confusing and ever-changing treatment diagrams (shown right).

These diagrams are hard to understand and their illegibility to young patients can worsen healthcare outcomes while they fight a potentially deadly disease.

Using our mobile app, young patients can now easily understand their treatment plan and play through story chapters to learn more about Leukemia.

Storybook Format

Looking to speak to kids as young as five years old, our storybook allows families to discuss tough topics in a more familiar context.

Personalized Education

Some patients want to learn everything they can about Leukemia while others would rather take it day by day.

Insights

Solution

Treatment Roadmap

A friendly leukemia protocol map serves as a chart alternative while locations on the map hold story chapters discussing that stage of treatment.

Personalization

Users can customize their game character, adjust story pacing, and remove specific triggering words.

Educational Storybook

Following the story of a young bear undergoing leukemia treatment, kids can learn more about their own treatment.

Reflection

Designing a product for kids with Leukemia meant that we were extra careful about our design choices and how we conducted user research.

Opening our system to customization was a good start, but future treatment trackers should take the time to conduct research in closer proximity to real patients and find exactly what types of customization people need.
